For more than one thousand years, Tibetan thangka paintings have been used as teaching tools and meditation aids to assist practitioners in their awakening to enlightenment. These classic images of buddhas, lamas, and tantric deities open a sacred doorway into the world of Tibetan Buddhism. Each image in this stunning calendar is paired with illuminating text that reveals its meaning and symbolism. These vibrant thangkas were created by Kalsang Dawa, a well-known Tibetan artist and thangka painter who had apprenticed with three of Lhasas most prominent masters of traditional art by the time he was fourteen. After joining the Tibetan exile community in Dharamsala, India, he spent eight years studying with the Venerable Sengye Yeshi, former personal painter of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Kalsangs vision is to show both Westerners and homeland Tibetans that the thangka tradition doesnt have to be frozen in time or meaning. Like Buddhism itself, thangkas can be a direct expression of mindfulness in the here and now.
