At its core, Catan is a game about trading and expansion. Essentially, players act as settlers on the fictional island of Catan, where they must establish settlements, cities, and roads by spending one of five resources: wool, grain, lumber, brick, and ore. The board game allows players to collect resources. The goal is to become the dominant force on the island and achieve 10 victory points to win the game.
Since its release, Catan has become an international success—with over 22 million copies of the game being sold. Catan has a number of expansion packs to make the base game more challenging or to accommodate additional players. These expansion pack include Seafarers, Explorer and Pirates, Cities and Knights, and even a junior version for younger children.
Expansion packs are a great way to add additional intrigue to the original game. Each expansion pack has a different theme and goal to ensure that even the most experienced Catan player will be challenged. To use an expansion pack, you must already have the original version of Catan as each expansion builds off of the base game.
In the Seafarers expansion, players can explore and develop the uncharted Isles of Catan. Extending off the original Catan game, the Seafarers expansion allows players to build ships and acquire additional resources on the isles in their quest to achieve the ultimate ruler of Catan.
In the Cities & Knights expansion, players must ward off wild barbarians who are attracted to the wealth of Catan. The players must work together to build a strong army of knights to successfully defend Catan.
The Traders & Barbarians, five new scenarios are added and allows for as little as two players to participate. These five scenarios include The Fisherman of Catan, the Rivers of Catan, Caravans Nomads, Barbarian Attack, and Traders and Barbarians.
