Impressionist painter Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) was an American among the French, a woman among the men. Cassatts paintings are refreshing products of the female gaze, her women in command of their space and bodies, unguarded in a way that her male counterparts couldnt manage to portray: Women relax and babies fidget. Mothers are busy even when theyre at leisure. Children dangle off their mothers, bored and happy. And mother and child are always a unified presence. This idealized domesticity earned Cassatt the distinction of painting the modern Madonna, and she turned her paintings into a genre.Educated at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Cassatt traveled to and from Europe to study the old masters. She eventually settled in Paris, where her work was accepted into the official salons before she was invited to join the impressionists. Thirty years of Cassatts paintings fill this calendar. All of Pomegranates calendars are printed with soy-based inks on FSC certified paper, which means the paper has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and manufactured by an FSC certified printer.
